A VW Bay Window Story: Rust, Rehab and Restoration- “So here’s what I’m thinking…”

“So, here’s what I’m thinking…”

Over time, stories tend to acquire new details and become further and further for the truth, so believe me when I say I will do my best to remember exactly how everything happened. Memory is not my friend and it has been a life time since this story started.

A little over 4 years ago, I was sitting in the living room with my Dad and a large dragon named Pete. Wait, scrap the dragon, I think that was on TV.
It was around 11pm and I was about 4 beers deep when I suddenly sat bolt upright with a glint in my eye (beer goggles) and proclaimed, “So, here’s what I was thinking…”

For as long as I can remember I had loved VW buses. The dream was to own a split screen, but I loved every iteration of the transporter ever built.
I had realised in my lightly fuddled state that I had a good amount of savings, having moved in with my parents after a light 6 month long trip in New Zealand.
“Now, bare with me, Dad. Keep an open mind”, I explained.
” Do you remember how you mentioned recently you fancied a project to keep busy and that I’ve always wanted to own a VW bus?”

It turned out that he had no idea what I was talking about and I had potentially fabricated the entire conversations in my head, but this did not stop me…I was on a roll.

I took to the internet and in my drunk state found a 1978 Devon Moonraker sitting only 4.1 Miles away. My excitement must have been obvious, because Dad turned of the rerun of Poirot and joined me in scrutinising over the Ebay post.

It had begun…
