Surfing is one of the most exhilarating ways to connect with the ocean—but getting started can feel a little overwhelming. Whether you’re paddling out for the first time or just gathering your gear, here’s what every beginner needs to know.
Essential Surfing Gear for Beginners
1. Soft-Top Surfboard
For your first board, choose a soft-top longboard (8–9 feet). It’s stable, buoyant, and forgiving—ideal for learning balance and pop-ups. Hardboards look cooler but hurt more when you fall!
2. Wetsuit (or Rash Guard)
Depending on your local water temperature, you’ll need either:
A wetsuit (3/2mm or 4/3mm) for colder waters
A rash guard and boardshorts/swimsuit for warm waters
These protect you from cold, sunburn, and board rash.
3. Surf Leash
This leash attaches your back ankle to the board, so you don’t lose it when you fall (which will happen—often). It’s also a safety tool to keep your board from drifting into other surfers.
4. Wax or Traction Pad
Surf wax gives your board grip so your feet don’t slide. Apply it to the top of your board (not the bottom!). Some boards also come with a back traction pad, especially helpful for shortboards.
5. Sunscreen
Choose a water-resistant sunscreen with high SPF. Surfing means constant sun exposure—even on cloudy days.
